Generation M

So after reading that last assignment I'm not sure how to feel about generation M. First of all are we (speaking of us early 20 years olds, sorry elderly SMACers) part of generation M or are they generally younger? Second I'm not sure what this means for our teaching experience. I suppose it leaves me feeling a little pessimistic, will we be in a constant battle for our students attention? I suppose that's always been a problem for teachers (you don't need technology to doodle or daydream) but I feel that we'll have an especially hard task with the advent of texting and smart phones. I suppose if nothing else this will challenge us to always try and be fresh and work hard to keep our lessons energetic and easy to pay attention to.

  1. Sean,

I am one of the elderly SMACers you speak of...kind of. I feel like if we can model responsible technology behavior to our students, as we are as indulged in the technology as they are, it might show them how to respectfully use it and make the classroom more productive.

    Just a thought

  2. I agree with Jake, I think if we are good examples and try to make the classroom a environment where technology is used responsibly I think the students will respond positively and use technology productively.

  3. I think that the conjecture is that there are at least a couple of potentially exciting possibilities to be seized upon, Sean. One is the modeling opportunity that Jake references. Another is the potential for drawing kids in (rather than giving them an easy way to check out) by offering ways of doing school that make use of, rather than excluding, tools with which they are both familiar and experienced. It can be a BIG step forward if kids feel that they have something to bring to school, something to contribute.
